Doss risked his life - . The film will be released on November 4. Mel Gibson gets a career reboot with 'Hacksaw Ridge' . Gibson directed the movie, his first directorial venture since Apocalypto in 2. Hacksaw Ridge is a battle drama about famed peacenik Desmond Doss, the first conscientious objector ever awarded the Congressional Medal of Honour. Doss was a medic who, for religious reasons, refused to kill the enemy or even carry a gun, but went to war anyway to rescue the wounded. He saved the lives of dozens of men. Andrew Garfield stars in the film as Doss, and his co- stars are Vince Vaughn, Hugo Weaving, Luke Bracey, Sam Worthington and Teresa Palmer. Asked Sunday at a press conference for the one word that summed up his relationship with Hollywood, Gibson replied, “Survival.”He also answered questions about acting and directing.“Maybe I’m a megalomaniac, I don’t know,” said Gibson of his preference for the directing side.
